EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph, taken by the renowned war artist Frank Henry Mason Matania in 1916, captures the entrance hall of the Union Jack Club, a sanctuary for soldiers and sailors returning from the front lines during World War I. Located near Waterloo Station in London, the Union Jack Club was established in 1907 through public subscription and graciously opened by King Edward VII. The club was designed as a haven for servicemen, offering essential facilities such as a dining room, smoking room, library, billiard room, barber, bathrooms, bedrooms, and even a temporary address while in London. The Union Jack Club welcomed not only British servicemen but also foreign soldiers, as depicted in the background of this image where a group of Russian soldiers can be seen. The Union Jack Club played a vital role in providing rest and accommodation for those who had bravely served their countries during the First World War.
