EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcolored copperplate stipple engraving, created between 1816 and 1830, showcases two distinct owl species native to Eurasia: the Eurasian eagle-owl (Bubo bubo) and the tawny owl (Strix aluco). The illustration, taken from Dumont de Sainte-Croix's Dictionary of Natural Science: Ornithology, was produced in Paris, France. Jean Gabriel Pretre (1780-1845), a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo, was responsible for the original artwork. His meticulous attention to detail is evident in the intricately rendered plumage and expressive features of these owls. The engraving was expertly executed by Guyard, under the direction of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin, and published by F.G. Levrault. The Eurasian eagle-owl, depicted on the left, is a large and powerful bird of prey with distinctive ear tufts and yellow eyes. Its broad, rounded wings and large, hooked beak make it a formidable hunter of rodents, reptiles, and other birds. The tawny owl, on the right, is a smaller, more agile species with a round face, large yellow eyes, and distinctive ear tufts. Its speckled, brownish-reddish plumage provides excellent camouflage in wooded habitats. This historical illustration not only showcases the beauty and diversity of these owl species but also highlights the exceptional skill and craftsmanship of the artists and engravers involved in its creation. It serves as a reminder of the rich natural history heritage that continues to inspire and captivate us today.
