EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored copperplate stipple engraving depicts two exquisitely detailed birds from the natural world: the Eurasian Woodcock (Scolopax rusticola) and the Bar-tailed Godwit (Limosa lapponica). The image is taken from the "Dictionnaire de Sciences Naturelles: Ornithologie," published in Paris between 1816 and 1830 by F.G. Levrault. The illustration was created by the skilled hand of Jean Gabriel Pretre (1780-1845), who was a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo and later became an artist at the Museum of Natural History. The Eurasian Woodcock, a member of the Scolopacidae family, is shown on the left side of the print with its distinctive plumage of rich, earthy tones. Its long, down-curved bill is open, revealing the pinkish-red interior. The Bar-tailed Godwit, a wading bird from the Limosidae family, is depicted on the right side of the print, with its long, straight bill and intricately patterned plumage. The engraving was executed by Miss Coignet, under the direction of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin. The meticulous stipple technique used in the engraving process allowed for the intricate details of the birds' feathers, textures, and colors to be beautifully rendered. This historical artwork is a testament to the artistry and scientific precision of the time, showcasing the natural beauty of these two fascinating birds. The "Dictionnaire de Sciences Naturelles: Ornithologie" was a groundbreaking work that documented a vast array of species, making it an essential resource for naturalists and ornithologists of the time. This particular print is a captivating example of the high-quality illustrations that were produced during the golden age of natural history.
