EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in 1907, showcases a family group of the Koibal people, a subdivision of the Khakass people residing in Southern Siberia, Russia. The Koibal people are known for speaking the Turkic Koybal language, yet their ancestry is a rich blend of various ethnicities. The Koibal people emerged in the late 19th century as a result of the merger of several distinct groups, including the Abugach, Baikot, Kandyk, Tarazhak, Kol, and Arsh peoples. Most of these people are believed to have had closer ancestral ties to the Samoyedic peoples than to the Turkics. In this image, the family members are depicted with their loyal companions, their dogs, which were an integral part of their nomadic lifestyle. Their large, teepee-style tent, known as a 'mator' or 'motor,' is also visible in the background. The mator was a crucial shelter for the Koibal people as they traversed the vast expanses of the Uralic region. The Koibal people were traditionally hunter-gatherers and reindeer herders, living in harmony with nature. Their history is deeply rooted in the rich cultural heritage of the Uralic region, which is reflected in their language, customs, and traditions. This photograph provides a rare glimpse into the lives of these fascinating people and their connection to their land and animals.
