EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures the moment of unity and triumph between two of World War Two's most renowned military commanders, Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery and Marshal Georgi Konstantinovich Rokossovsky. Taken on 10 May 1945, the image marks the historic meeting between the British and Soviet forces, which had been fighting separately against the German army in different theaters of the war. Montgomery, who commanded the 21st Army Group consisting of the British 2nd Army, 1st Canadian Army, and US Army units, had led the Allied advance across Holland and north Germany. On 4 May 1945, he received the surrender of the German forces opposed to him at Luneberg Heath near Hamburg, marking the end of the campaign in the northwest of Europe. Rokossovsky, one of the Red Army's finest commanders, had led the 2nd Belorussian Front across East Prussia, northern Poland, and into Germany. By the end of April 1945, his soldiers had linked up with Montgomery's forces in northern Germany. This meeting symbolized the unity and cooperation between the Allied forces, which played a crucial role in the final defeat of Nazi Germany. The photograph is one of 23 official images from the collection relating to the campaign in Northwest Europe, 1942-1945, and serves as a powerful reminder of the pivotal role these two commanders played in the war effort. The image captures the respect and admiration between the two men, as they stand side by side, having achieved a common goal.
