EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the intensity and bravery of the London Fire Brigade as they battled a blaze at the premises of Brunton & Co, lead manufacturers, in Miles Street, Vauxhall, on 6 March 1957. The first floor and roof were already engulfed in flames when the first fire crews arrived on the scene. The storage of baled cardboard cartons on the first floor unfortunately aided the spread of the fire. The firefighters are seen here in action, deploying hoses and directing water towards the flames. The hoses, a crucial piece of equipment in firefighting, were rolled out from the fire engine and connected to the hydrant on the street. The firefighters, dressed in their iconic uniforms and protective gear, work diligently to extinguish the fire. The smoke and smoky conditions are evident in the photograph, making the task at hand all the more challenging for the brave firefighters. The extended ladders are also visible, providing access to the upper floors and roof of the building. The photograph transports us back to the 1950s and the era of photography. It is a reminder of the vital role that the London Fire Brigade played, and continues to play, in protecting the city and its people from fire-related emergencies. The damage to the building is evident, but the resilience and determination of the firefighters shines through in this powerful image.
