EDITORS COMMENTS
This page of sketches by acclaimed artist Norman Morrow transports us back to the historic first Royal Command Performance at the Palace Theatre in London on 1 July 1912. King George V and Queen Mary were graciously entertained by an array of the finest acts from the world of variety, an art form that had captured the hearts and minds of the British public. Among the illustrious performers immortalized in Morrow's illustrations are the enchanting Miss Clarice Mayne, the charismatic male impersonator; the indomitable Vesta Tilley, who defied gender norms with her male attire and quick wit; the mischievous Pipifax or Panlo; the irrepressible Happy Fanny Fields; the inimitable George Robey, who brought laughter to the masses; the jovial Harry Tate; the versatile Alfred Lester; the diminutive and delightful Little Tich; the beloved Harry Lauder; the graceful Palace Girls; and the virtuosic ballet dancers, Novikoff and Anna Pavlova. Morrow and the Bystander theatre critic, Jingle, were privileged to attend this three-hour extravaganza, which marked the beginning of an enduring tradition that continues to this day as the Royal Variety Performance. The sketches offer a rare glimpse into the magic of the stage, where laughter, music, and dance came together to entertain the royal family and the people of Britain.
