EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the fractured barrel of the German Paris Gun, a historic long-range siege weapon used during the final stages of World War I. The Paris Gun, also known as the Emperor William Gun, was designed and manufactured by the renowned German company Krupp. First fired from the forest of Coucy on March 21, 1918, this powerful artillery piece marked the beginning of a series of attacks on Paris. The first shell landed on the Quai du Seine, creating an explosion that echoed across the city. Over the next few months, approximately 300 shells were fired towards the French capital, with an average rate of around 20 per day. The Paris Gun held the distinction of having the longest range of any artillery piece used during World War I, with the ability to reach targets up to 130 kilometers (81 miles) away. The metal barrel, now fractured and broken, stands as a testament to the destructive power and ingenuity of the weapons of war during this great conflict.
