EDITORS COMMENTS
This colored engraving showcases Franaï‡ois-Paul Brueys d'Aigalliers (1753-1798), a prominent French commander of the 18th century. Born into the aristocracy, Brueys rose through the ranks of the French Navy, becoming a count in 1787. His military career was marked by his unwavering loyalty to the monarchy, making him a target during the French Revolution. Brueys is depicted here in a formal attire, with a stern yet resolute expression on his face. His hair is styled in the contemporary fashion of the time, and he wears a red jacket adorned with gold buttons and white lapels. The engraving also reveals Brueys' affiliation with Freemasonry, as he is shown wearing the square and compass emblem on his collar. Brueys' military prowess was evident in his successful defense of Toulon against the British fleet in 1793. However, his refusal to swear allegiance to the revolutionary government led to his downfall. He was arrested and executed by guillotine in 1798. This image, taken from "The Universal History" published in 1885, offers a glimpse into the life of a man who embodied the complexities of the late 18th century - a loyal aristocrat, a skilled military commander, and a Freemason, navigating the tumultuous waters of the French Revolution.
