1. Title: "Frederick Augustus Porter Barnard: Pioneering Educator Advocating for Women's Rights at Columbia University, Circa 1880" Frederick Augustus Porter Barnard (1809-1889) is depicted in this photograph, taken circa 1880. Born in New York City, Barnard was an esteemed American professor, renowned for his expertise in mathematics and natural history. However, his most significant contributions to education lie in his groundbreaking advocacy for women's rights at Columbia University. Barnard's innovative spirit and commitment to equality began when he became the President of Columbia College in 1864. At a time when women's education was not widely recognized or accepted, Barnard championed their cause, believing that higher education was essential for both men and women. In 1867, he established the "Columbia College School for Teachers for Women," which later evolved into the "Columbia University School of Nursing" in 1892.
