1127 12th Ceramic Dresden Princes Procession Rulers Tile Tiled Tiles Wettin Furstenzug

EDITORS COMMENTS
The Furstenzug, or Procession of the Princes, in Dresden, Germany, is a stunning wall of over 25,000 ceramic tiles depicting the rulers of the House of Wettin from 1127 to 1694. This impressive work of art, located in the Albertinum Gallery, was created between 1871 and 1876 under the direction of the painter and sculptor, Carl Blechen. Each tile measures approximately 30 centimeters by 20 centimeters and was meticulously crafted to capture the likeness and regal attire of the depicted rulers. The Procession of the Princes begins with Margrave Conrad the Great of Meissen, the founder of the House of Wettin, and continues through the centuries with various margraves, electors, and dukes. The last tile features Elector Friedrich August III, who ruled from 1694 to 1733. The intricate detail and historical accuracy of the tiles make the Furstenzug a must-see attraction for visitors to Dresden. The creation of the Furstenzug was a significant undertaking, requiring the expertise of many skilled artisans and craftsmen. The tiles were produced at the Meissen Porcelain Manufactory, which had been founded in 1710 and was renowned for its high-quality ceramics. The tiles were fired at temperatures up to 1,200 degrees Celsius, ensuring their durability and resistance to weathering. The Furstenzug is a testament to the rich history and cultural heritage of Dresden and the House of Wettin. It is a source of pride for the people of Dresden and a reminder of their city's storied past. The wall is not only a work of art but also a historical document, providing a visual record of the rulers who shaped the destiny of the region for over five centuries.
