EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking black and white portrait captures the intense gaze and unyielding determination of General Joseph Gallieni, a pivotal figure in French military history during the First World War. Gallieni, born in 1849 in Paris, France, began his military career in 1868 and rose through the ranks to become a commander in the French Army. By the outbreak of World War I in 1914, Gallieni had amassed an impressive record of military successes and was appointed as the Commander-in-Chief of the French Army. He is best known for his strategic role in the defense of Paris during the early stages of the war, when he successfully repelled the German advance on the city. Gallieni's military genius was not limited to defense. He is also credited with the successful counteroffensive at the Second Battle of the Marne, which marked the turning point of the war for the Allies. Gallieni's leadership and strategic acumen were instrumental in halting the German advance and ultimately leading to the eventual Allied victory. This portrait, taken by the renowned French photographer Ferdinand Roybet in 1916, captures the essence of Gallieni's military prowess and unwavering commitment to his country. Roybet, who was known for his mastery of portrait photography, expertly captures the intensity and focus in Gallieni's eyes, as well as the sternness of his expression. The photograph is a testament to the indomitable spirit of a great military leader and a reminder of the sacrifices made during the First World War.
