EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: "General John A. Logan: A Civil War Hero and Political Leader" This photograph captures the distinguished image of General John Alexander Logan (1826-1886), an influential figure during the American Civil War and post-war political era. The image, taken around 1874, showcases Logan in his later years, with a stern yet resolute expression and impeccably dressed in the uniform of a Union general. Born in Illinois, Logan rose to prominence as a lawyer and politician before the Civil War. When the conflict erupted, he quickly answered the call to service, leading a regiment in the Army of the Tennessee. Logan's military career was marked by several significant accomplishments, including the capture of Fort Donelson and the relief of besieged Union forces at Cairo, Illinois. After the war, Logan continued his political ascent, serving as a member of the Illinois State Senate and representing his state in Congress. In 1868, he was elected Governor of Illinois, and in 1871, he was appointed Commissioner-General of the Grand Army of the Republic, a veterans' organization for Union soldiers. Logan's most enduring legacy, however, came from his role in establishing Decoration Day, which later became Memorial Day. In 1868, he issued General Order No. 11, calling for the decoration of the graves of Union soldiers on May 30. This tradition continues to this day, honoring the sacrifices of those who have given their lives in defense of their country. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the life and accomplishments of General John A. Logan, a man who played a crucial role in the Civil War and the rebuilding of the nation in its aftermath.
