EDITORS COMMENTS
In the heart of the Dreyfus Affair's intrigue and deception, General Marie-Georges Picquart, head of the counter-espionnage bureau, dons an unexpected disguise. This satirical print from circa 1906, published by Tetes, Turc et Cie, depicts Picquart in a tight-fitting corset, a stark contrast to the traditional military uniform and masculine image of a high-ranking officer. The cartoonist's intent is clear: to mock Picquart's role in the controversial affair, which saw Captain Alfred Dreyfus wrongfully accused and convicted of treason. The Dreyfus Affair, a major scandal in French history, began in 1894 when a document believed to be a military secret was found in the possession of Dreyfus. The document, known as the "bordereau," contained information about military fortifications in Alsace-Lorraine, which was then under German control. Dreyfus was arrested, tried, and sentenced to life in prison on Devil's Island. However, new evidence emerged, and Picquart, who had taken over the investigation, discovered that the handwriting on the document did not match Dreyfus's. Despite this, Picquart was pressured to maintain the original verdict. The affair sparked a national debate and led to the exoneration of Dreyfus in 1899. This satirical print of Picquart in a corset serves as a reminder of the complex web of deceit and political maneuvering that characterized the Dreyfus Affair. The image not only pokes fun at Picquart but also highlights the larger issues of anti-Semitism, military incompetence, and political corruption that were exposed during this tumultuous period in French history.
