This poignant photograph captures the moment of surrender during the Siege of Kut Al Amara in Mesopotamia (now Iraq) during the First World War. At the center, seated with a weary expression, is General Sir Charles Vere Ferrers Townshend (1861-1924), a distinguished British Indian Army officer.
