EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, Prince George, later King George V, and his wife, Mary of Teck, are seen embarking on their grand tour of the British Empire in 1901. The tour, which included a stop in Australia, was a reward for the dominions' participation in the South African War of 1899-1902. The tour was orchestrated by Colonial Secretary Joseph Chamberlain with the support of Prime Minister Lord Salisbury. The Duke and Duchess arrived in Australia on April 20, 1901, and were warmly welcomed by the Australian people. One of the highlights of their visit was the opening of the first session of the Australian Parliament upon the creation of the Commonwealth of Australia on May 9, 1901. The Prince and Princess were the first monarchs to visit Australia, and their presence was a significant moment in the country's history. The image captures the couple stepping off a boat, with the Australian flag flying proudly in the background. George, dressed in a naval uniform, and Mary, wearing a elegant dress and hat, look out towards the crowd of onlookers with smiles on their faces. The Duke's hand is raised in a wave, while Mary holds on to her hat with one hand and waves with the other. The Australian sun shines down on them, casting a warm glow over the scene. This photograph is a testament to the strong connection between the British monarchy and the Australian people, and the significance of the Australian Commonwealth's formation in the larger context of the British Empire. The image captures a moment of history, as the Prince and Princess begin their journey through the Empire, bringing with them a sense of unity and pride.
