This striking photograph print depicts Gerard Callenburg (1695-1766), a prominent Dutch naval commander of the 18th century. Callenburg was born in Amsterdam and began his naval career at a young age, serving under the Dutch Admiral Michiel de Ruyter. He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming a captain in 1721 and a rear-admiral in 1747. During his long and distinguished career, Callenburg played a key role in several major naval battles against the British. In 1747, he led a successful attack on the British fleet off the coast of Portugal, capturing several ships and inflicting heavy damage. He was also involved in the Battle of Finisterre in 1747, where the Dutch fleet, under the command of Admiral Cornelis Tromp, defeated the British in a fierce engagement. Callenburg's leadership and tactical skills were highly regarded by his contemporaries. He was known for his courage and determination in battle, as well as his ability to inspire his men to fight with great tenacity. In recognition of his achievements, he was promoted to vice-admiral in 1751 and admiral in 1757.
