EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite 14th century miniature illustration is taken from the pages of "Nuova Cronica" or "New Chronicles," a seminal work by the Florentine chronicler Giovanni Villani. The image, found on folio 155r of the manuscript housed in the Vatican Library, depicts a pivotal moment in the history of Florence and the Catholic Church. Giovanni Villani, born around 1276 or 1280, was a prominent Italian historian and ecclesiastic. With a flowing white beard, he is shown here in his bishop's robes, holding a crook in one hand and a miter in the other. The bishop is surrounded by a group of friars and other clergy, all gathered to witness the foundation of the new church of Santa Croce. Santa Croce, or the Holy Cross, is a prominent basilica in Florence, Italy, renowned for its historical and artistic significance. The foundation of the church, which took place in 1294, was a significant event in the city's religious and cultural history. The intricately detailed miniature, with its rich colors and delicate brushstrokes, captures the solemnity and importance of the occasion. The image serves as a testament to the enduring power of religious institutions in medieval Italy and the role of chroniclers like Giovanni Villani in recording and preserving history for future generations.
