EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait depicts Gomez Suarez de Figueroa y Córdova, Duke of Feria, a prominent Spanish statesman who served in Italy and Germany during the late 16th and early 17th centuries. Born in Seville, Spain, in 1587, Gomez Suarez de Figueroa rose through the ranks of the Spanish aristocracy, eventually becoming the governor of Milan in 1618. His political career was marked by his service to the Spanish crown in Italy and Germany, where he played a significant role in the complex web of European politics during the Thirty Years' War. The Duke of Feria is shown here in formal attire, wearing a richly embroidered doublet and a ruff collar, signifying his high status. His stern expression and piercing gaze convey a sense of determination and authority. The background of the portrait is simple, with a plain dark fabric providing a contrast to the Duke's ornate clothing. Gomez Suarez de Figueroa's tenure as governor of Milan was marked by his efforts to maintain Spanish control in the region amidst growing tensions with the French and the Protestant forces. He also played a role in the negotiations that led to the Peace of Madrid in 1619, which brought an end to the Eighty Years' War between Spain and the Netherlands. Later, in Germany, the Duke of Feria served as the Spanish ambassador to the Holy Roman Emperor, Ferdinand II, and played a key role in the Spanish intervention in the Thirty Years' War. He died in Regensburg, Germany, in 1634. This portrait is a testament to the Duke of Feria's significant impact on European politics during a time of great upheaval and change. This image is a rare and valuable glimpse into the life of a pivotal historical figure, and a reminder of the complex political landscape of early modern Europe.
