EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored copperplate stipple engraving, created between 1816 and 1830, showcases two intriguing bird species from the natural world: the Great Bustard (Otis tarda) and the Common Ringed Plover (Charadrius hiaticula). The image is taken from the "Dictionnaire de Sciences Naturelles: Ornithologie" (Dictionary of Natural Sciences: Ornithology) by Frederic Cuvier, which was published by F.G. Levrault in Paris, France. The Great Bustard, depicted on the left, is a large and powerful bird, with its distinctive feathered crest and long, powerful legs. Once widespread across Europe, this species is now considered vulnerable due to habitat loss and hunting. The artist, Jean Gabriel Pretre (1780-1845), expertly captured the Great Bustard's regal presence, making it a true masterpiece of natural history illustration. On the right, the Common Ringed Plover is shown in its elegant simplicity. This small, wading bird is characterized by its ringed neck and orange-red legs. The Common Ringed Plover is a widespread species, but its populations have declined in some areas due to habitat loss and disturbance. This engraving was created by J.G. Pretre, who was a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo and later became an artist at the Museum of Natural History. The engraving was expertly executed by Plie, under the direction of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin. The intricate details and vibrant colors make this a truly remarkable piece of historical ornithological art.
