EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored copperplate stipple engraving, published by F.G. Levrault in Paris, France, in 1816, showcases two intriguing bat species: the Greater False Vampire Bat, Megaderma lyra, and the Trident Leaf-nosed Bat, Asellia tridens. The illustration, which was painted by Jean Gabriel Pretre and engraved by Dien under the direction of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin, was originally featured in Frederic Cuvier's Dictionary of Natural Science: Mammals. The Greater False Vampire Bat, with its wings outstretched, is depicted on the left side of the image. This bat species, native to Africa and Asia, is known for its elongated false fangs and its roosting behavior in caves and trees. Contrary to popular belief, it does not feed on blood, but rather consumes fruit, nectar, and insects. On the right side of the engraving, the Trident Leaf-nosed Bat, Asellia tridens, is illustrated with its distinctive leaf-shaped nose. Native to Central and South America, this bat species is named for its unique nose, which resembles a trident. It uses its nose to locate prey, such as insects and spiders, by emitting high-frequency sounds and listening for the echoes. This beautiful and historically significant engraving is a testament to the intricate detail and artistry of natural history illustrations during the early 19th century. The work of Jean Gabriel Pretre, who was a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo and later became an artist to the Museum of Natural History, is a valuable contribution to the field of zoology and the history of science.
