This photograph, taken in the late 1860s, showcases two intriguing pipefish species: the Greater Pipefish (Syngnathus acus) and the Broad-Nosed Pipefish (Syngnathus typhle). The Greater Pipefish, depicted on the left, is characterized by its slender body and elongated snout, which resembles a pipe or tube. Its body is adorned with thin, golden stripes, providing excellent camouflage among the seaweed and coral.
