EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored copperplate stipple engraving is an exquisite depiction of two birds of prey, the Grey Goshawk (Accipiter novaehollandiae) and the Dappled Brown Sparrowhawk (Falco peregrinus), from Dumont de Sainte-Croix's Dictionary of Natural Science: Ornithology, published in Paris between 1816 and 1830. The illustration was created by the skilled painter of natural history, Jean Gabriel Pretre (1780-1845), and expertly engraved by Coutant, under the direction of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin. Pretre's extensive knowledge and expertise in natural history was honed during his tenure as painter at Empress Josephine's zoo, and later as artist to the Museum of Natural History. The Grey Goshawk, a native of Australia and New Guinea, is depicted with its wings spread wide, showcasing its distinctive grey plumage and broad, pointed wings. Its sharp, hooked beak and piercing eyes convey its predatory nature. The Dappled Brown Sparrowhawk, also known as the Peregrine Falcon or Falco peregrinus, is shown perched on a branch, its dappled brown feathers providing excellent camouflage in its woodland habitat. With its piercing gaze and outstretched wings, this raptor is a master of the sky, known for its incredible speed and agility during its aerial hunts. This intricately detailed engraving is a testament to the artistry and scientific accuracy of the time, offering a glimpse into the natural world and the dedication of the artists and scientists who documented it. The delicate handcoloring further enhances the beauty and realism of the birds, making this a truly captivating work of art.
