Gustav Hamel posting an airmail letter

The aviator Gustav Hamel posting an airmail letter which he himself will transport by air to Windsor. The first aerial mail service took place on 9 September 1911 from Hendon to Windsor and back again, and Hamel was the first pilot to arrive. King George V gave permission for the aeroplanes to land in the grounds of Windsor Castle. During September 1911 the Grahame-White company operated an experimental air mail service for two weeks between Hendon and Windsor. As well commemorating the coronation of King George V, and raising money for charity, the event publicised the possibilities of the aeroplane as a means of transport

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, aviator Gustav Hamel is seen intently focusing on writing a letter at Hendon Aerodrome, with an airmail envelope in hand. The significance of this moment lies in the fact that Hamel would personally transport the letter to Windsor using his aeroplane, marking the first instance of an aerial mail service in the United Kingdom. This groundbreaking event took place on 9 September 1911, during a two-week experimental service operated by the Grahame-White company between Hendon and Windsor. King George V granted permission for the aeroplanes to land in the grounds of Windsor Castle, making this occasion not only a milestone in aviation history but also a commemoration of the monarch's coronation and a charitable fundraiser. The event showcased the potential of aeroplanes as a revolutionary means of transport, paving the way for future advancements in air communications. Gustav Hamel, a pioneering pilot, became the first to arrive at Windsor Castle with his aircraft, further solidifying the importance of this momentous occasion. The Grahame-White company's aerial mail service aimed to demonstrate the feasibility of using aeroplanes for delivering mail, ultimately contributing to the development of air travel as an essential mode of transportation. This image encapsulates a pivotal moment in history, as Hamel prepares to post his letter, knowing that it will be transported through the skies rather than by traditional postal methods. The photograph serves as a testament to the ingenuity and innovation of the early aviation era.
