The image is taken from Jean Gabriel Pretre's contributions to the "Dictionnaire de Naturaliste: Omnithologie," published in Paris between 1816 and 1830. Pretre, a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo, later became the artist to the Museum of Natural History. The Hawaiian honeycreeper, also known as the 'iiwi,' is a vulnerable species of honeycreeper with bright red feathers on its chest and wings, contrasting with its green back and black mask.
