This evocative image captures the young Henri, Duke of Bordeaux (1820-1883), in the prime of his boyhood, as he proudly dons the uniform of a French soldier. Born as the eldest grandson of the deposed King Charles X of France, Henri was the rightful heir to the throne following the abdication of his uncle, King Louis-Philippe I, in 1830. However, his claim to the French crown was contested, and he was eventually exiled from France, living out his days in Austria and Spain. In this photograph, taken around 1833, the Duke of Bordeaux, also known as the Count of Chambord, is shown in a smart military uniform, complete with epaulettes adorning his shoulders. The young boy's serious expression and determined gaze convey a sense of resilience and determination, reflecting his unwavering belief in his rightful claim to the French throne. Despite the political turmoil that surrounded him, the Duke of Bordeaux remained a symbol of the Bourbon monarchy and its legacy.
