This portrait of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, one of America's most celebrated poets, was captured in 1875. Longfellow, born in Portland, Maine, in 1807, is best known for his evocative and narrative poetry that often drew upon American history, mythology, and nature. His works, including "Paul Revere's Ride," "The Song of Hiawatha," and "Evangeline," were widely popular during his lifetime and continue to be read and admired today. Longfellow's literary success came after a challenging childhood marked by the death of his mother when he was just eleven years old and the subsequent separation of his parents. He went on to study at Bowdoin College and later in Europe, where he honed his skills as a poet and scholar. In 1835, he married Frances Appleton, with whom he had six children. Tragedy struck again when a fire in their home left Frances severely burned, and Longfellow was left to care for their children alone. Despite these hardships, Longfellow persevered and continued to write, producing some of his most beloved works during this period. This portrait, taken in later life, captures the wisdom and introspection that come with a life well-lived and a mind rich with experience.
