EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait of Princess Alexandra, Duchess of Fife, graced the cover of The Bystander magazine in 1909, following her recent presentation at Court. Born on December 25, 1891, Princess Alexandra was the eldest daughter of Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught, and Princess Louise Margaret of Prussia. Her parents were visiting Canada at the time of her birth, and she was therefore known as the Princess Royal of Canada until her grandfather, King Edward VII, acceded to the throne in 1901. Upon her return to Europe, Princess Alexandra was raised in England and presented at Court in 1909. The occasion was marked by numerous photographs and articles in the press, including this one on the front cover of The Bystander. The magazine's readers would have been intrigued by the young princess's elegant appearance and poised demeanor, as well as her striking resemblance to her grandmother, Queen Victoria. Princess Alexandra's life was marked by tragedy as well as triumph. In 1913, she married Prince Albert, Duke of Fife, who was killed in action during World War I in 1916. She later married the Earl of Athlone in 1934, and became known as Princess Arthur of Connaught. Princess Alexandra was a dedicated patron of various charities and organizations, and was known for her kindness and generosity. She passed away on November 27, 1959, at the age of 67. This portrait is a testament to the enduring fascination with the British royal family and their history, and offers a glimpse into the life of a young princess on the cusp of adulthood and her future role as a member of the royal family.
