EDITORS COMMENTS
HMS Marlborough: Arrival of the Commander-in-Chief of the Mediterranean Fleet (1923) This evocative photograph captures the moment of arrival of the Commander-in-Chief of the Mediterranean Fleet aboard HMS Marlborough in 1923. The Iron Duke-class battleship, named in honor of John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough, was built between 1912 and 1914 at Devonport Royal Dockyard and entered service just prior to the First World War. Post-war, HMS Marlborough was assigned to the Mediterranean Fleet and took part in significant military interventions, including the Allied intervention in the Russian Civil War in the Black Sea (1919-1920) and the Greco-Turkish War. In this image, the Commander-in-Chief is greeted with a salute from the ship's deck crew as he steps ashore, signifying the respect and loyalty of the crew towards their commanding officer. The senior officers on the ship's bridge also salute in recognition of the arrival of their new leader. The year is 1923, and the 20s roar on, marking the end of an era and the beginning of a new one for the British Royal Navy and its Mediterranean Fleet. This historical photograph is a testament to the rich maritime heritage of the British Royal Navy and the significant role HMS Marlborough played in the Mediterranean theatre during the 1920s. A symbol of British naval power and prestige, this Iron Duke-class battleship remains a fascinating subject for naval enthusiasts and historians alike.
