EDITORS COMMENTS
HMS Marlborough: A Ceremonial Guard Awaits the Arrival of Sultan Abdulmecid II This evocative photograph captures a moment of historical significance as the HMS Marlborough, an Iron Duke-class battleship of the British Royal Navy, prepares for the arrival of Sultan Abdulmecid II, the 37th Sultan of the Ottoman Empire and the 2nd Caliph of Islam, in 1923. The HMS Marlborough, named in honor of John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough, was built between 1912 and 1914 at Devonport Royal Dockyard and entered service just prior to the First World War. Assigned to the Mediterranean Fleet after the war, the Marlborough took part in the Allied intervention in the Russian Civil War in the Black Sea (1919-1920) and the Greco-Turkish War. In this image, the forecastle of the Marlborough is adorned with a grand guard of uniformed soldiers, their weapons at the ready, as they await the arrival of the Sultan. The imposing turrets and guns of the battleship stand tall in the background, a testament to the military might of the British Navy. The Sultan, dressed in ceremonial attire, is expected to arrive soon, and the guard, with their sharp gaze and poised weapons, are ready to ensure his safe passage. The year is 1923, and the world is in the midst of the Roaring Twenties, a time of great change and upheaval. Yet, in this moment, tradition and ceremony hold sway, as the British Navy pays its respects to the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire. This photograph, with its rich history and intriguing narrative, offers a glimpse into a bygone era, a time when the world was connected by sea, and the British Navy ruled the waves.
