EDITORS COMMENTS
HMS Marlborough: A Torpedo Breaking Surface Before Its Run (circa 1923) This evocative photograph captures a pivotal moment in the history of HMS Marlborough, an Iron Duke-class battleship of the British Royal Navy. Named in honor of John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough, this formidable vessel was built between January 1912 and June 1914 at Devonport Royal Dockyard and entered service just prior to the First World War. Assigned to the Mediterranean Fleet after the war, HMS Marlborough took part in the Allied intervention in the Russian Civil War (1919-1920) in the Black Sea. The battleship also saw action in the Greco-Turkish War. In this image, a torpedo breaks the surface of the water before its run, ready to be launched from HMS Marlborough. The tension in the air is palpable as the crew prepares for the next mission. The Iron Duke-class battleships, including HMS Marlborough, were a significant part of the British Royal Navy's fleet during the 1920s. With their powerful guns and advanced technology, these battleships represented the pinnacle of naval power during this era. The 1920s, also known as the 'Roaring Twenties,' were a time of political and social change, and the British Royal Navy played a crucial role in maintaining peace and stability in the Mediterranean and beyond. This photograph, taken circa 1923, is a testament to the power and prowess of HMS Marlborough and the British Royal Navy during this period. The image of the torpedo breaking surface before its run serves as a reminder of the vital role that naval forces played in shaping the world during the 20th century.
