H. M. S. Swift

Launched in 1907, the Swift was a unique large Royal Navy destroyer. Her high cost and lack of hoped for high speed meant that no other similar ships were constructed before 1914. Surviving the war, the Swift was sold to be broken up in late 1921. Date: 1914

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases H.M.S. Swift, a distinctive large destroyer of the Royal Navy, launched in 1907. The Swift was an engineering marvel of its time, designed to deliver superior firepower and protection against torpedo attacks. However, her high construction costs and disappointing performance in terms of the hoped-for high speed made her a unique vessel in the Royal Navy fleet before 1914. The Swift, with her impressive dimensions of 305 feet in length and a beam of 28 feet, was an imposing sight on the water. Her armament consisted of four 12-pounder guns and two 4-inch guns, as well as two submerged torpedo tubes. Despite her impressive weaponry, the Swift's top speed of 27 knots was slower than anticipated, making her less effective in the open sea. Despite her limitations, the Swift played a crucial role in the early stages of World War I. She took part in several engagements, including the Battle of Heligoland Bight in 1914. Surviving the war, the Swift was eventually sold for scrap in late 1921, marking the end of an era for this historic vessel. This photograph captures the Swift in her prime, with her sleek lines, powerful engines, and formidable weaponry on full display. It offers a glimpse into the history of naval warfare during a pivotal period in world history, reminding us of the courage and innovation that defined the Royal Navy during World War I.
