EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the Pierrot troupe of the hospital ship "SS Ravenscroft" during World War I. The Pierrot troupe, a popular form of entertainment during the early 20th century, brought joy and amusement to the men on board the hospital ship. The troupe consisted of several medical personnel and crew members, who performed in the traditional white face and colorful costumes of the Pierrot character. From left to right, the standing members of the troupe include Surgeons R. H. H. Jolly, R.N.V.R., J. R. H. Turton, Surgeon W. Parker-Harrison, R.N.V.R., and Mr. E. Wardrop, the purser. Seated in the front row are Surgeon E. R. Sircom, R.N.V.R., Nursing Sister M. Gubb, who accompanied the troupe on the piano, and Mr. A. W. Hunkin, the second officer. The Pierrot troupe provided a much-needed distraction for the soldiers and sailors on board the hospital ship, which was used to treat the wounded and sick during the war. The troupe's performances brought a sense of normalcy and lightheartedness to the men, who were facing the harsh realities of war. This photograph, taken in 1917, is a poignant reminder of the human spirit and the importance of entertainment and morale-boosting activities during times of crisis. The Pierrot troupe of the hospital ship "SS Ravenscroft" is a fascinating piece of history from the First World War era.
