EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, His Royal Highness Prince George of Wales, later the Duke of Kent, is seen sitting casually at the Monterey Peninsula Country Club in California during his visit in 1928. The fourth son and fifth child of King George V and Queen Mary, Prince George was the younger brother of Kings Edward VIII and George VI. At the time of this image, he held the title of Duke of Kent, which he retained until his untimely death in a military air-crash on 25 August 1942. Prince George was in California to join his ship, H.M.S. "Durban," on which he served as a French interpreter. The photograph captures the young prince in a relaxed and informal setting, dressed in a stylish suit and hat, with a confident and charming expression on his face. The visit to California was a brief stopover on Prince George's journey to join his ship, which later traveled at high speed to relieve the sufferers from the devastating tornado that had affected the West Indies, Miami Beach, and the coast of Florida. The image offers a glimpse into the life of a young royal, far from the formalities of the British court, and highlights his role as a naval officer and humanitarian. This photograph is a testament to a moment in history, showcasing the young Duke of Kent's charisma and the informal side of royal life. The image is dated 1928 and was taken during Prince George's visit to California before he embarked on his naval duties.
