EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking portrait, H.S.H. Prince Francis of Teck, later known as the Duke of Teck, is depicted in full military regalia, showcasing his noble lineage and prestigious rank. Born on August 28, 1837, as Count Francis von Hohenstein in the German principality of Teck, he later joined the British Royal Family upon his marriage to Princess Mary Adelaide of Cambridge on June 12, 1866. The Duke's uniform in this photograph is that of a Prussian officer, reflecting his German heritage. However, it is essential to note that by the time of this portrait, Prince Francis had already renounced his German titles and allegiance, embracing his new identity as a British subject. Prince Francis was the father of Queen Mary, who would later become the consort of King George V and the grandmother of the present Queen Elizabeth II. This familial connection makes the Duke an integral figure in the history of the British monarchy. The portrait, taken in 1866, captures the Duke in his prime, with an air of confidence and regality. His piercing gaze and impeccably groomed beard add to his distinguished appearance. The photograph serves as a testament to the Duke's noble lineage and his significant role in the British Royal Family's history.
