EDITORS COMMENTS
These poignant words, spoken by Acting Sergeant Herbert Gibson, reflect the uncertainty and disappointment that came with sending young soldiers off to the battlefields of World War I. Born in September 1889, Gibson served with the 1st Northumbrian Field Ambulance of the Royal Army Medical Corps during the Great War. His weary expression and thoughtful gaze in this photograph hint at the heavy burden of responsibility he bore as a medical officer on the front lines. The "dud" to which Gibson refers could be a misfired grenade, a failed mission, or even a fallen comrade. The uncertainty of war left no room for certainty, and each day brought new challenges and heartaches. The 1st Northumbrian Field Ambulance was an essential part of the British military effort during WWI. Their role was to provide medical care to wounded soldiers on the battlefield and transport them to hospitals for further treatment. The Northumbrian Field Ambulance saw action in some of the most significant battles of the war, including the Battle of the Somme and the Battle of Passchendaele. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the human cost of war and the sacrifices made by soldiers like Acting Sergeant Gibson. It is a testament to the resilience and determination of those who served, and a reminder of the importance of remembering their stories.
