EDITORS COMMENTS
Plate 388 from John James Audubon's renowned work, "Birds of America," showcases two stunning passerine species: the Bullock's Oriole (Icterus bullockii) and the Eastern Meadowlark (Sturnella magna). The illustration, hand-colored from an aquatint engraving by Robert Havell & Son of London, captures the vibrant beauty of these birds in intricate detail. The Bullock's Oriole, depicted on the left, is a medium-sized oriole with a bright red crown, black wings, and a long, curved beak. The male's underparts are a rich, golden yellow, while the female's are a more muted yellow-brown. The Bullock's Oriole is a New World blackbird, belonging to the family Icteridae, and is native to western North America. On the right, the Eastern Meadowlark (Agelaius tricolor), a member of the Icteridae family and the state bird of Illinois, is shown perched on a branch. Its distinctive features include a black "V" on its chest, a yellow underbelly, and a long, pointed tail. The Eastern Meadowlark is a passerine bird and is commonly found in open grasslands and meadows across eastern North America. Both birds are depicted in their natural habitat, with the Bullock's Oriole perched on a branch and the Eastern Meadowlark looking down from a nearby perch. The intricate detail and lifelike quality of the illustration make it a stunning addition to any collection of natural history art.
