In October 1869, Stanley was sent by James Gordon Bennett (the owner of the New York Herald) to find Dr. David Livingstone, who had been exploring central Africa for several years without passing any communication to Europe. In 1871 Stanley found Livingstone at Ujiji, Tanganika, and with it also, fame and some fortune. Stanley led several further expeditions to Africa, the last of these in 1886 to find and relieve Emin Pasha. In 1892 he took British citizenship and was Unionist MP for Lambeth between 1895 and 1900

This engraving, taken from the cover of The Graphic issue dated July 7, 1890, showcases Sir Henry Morton Stanley in his exploration attire, poised confidently with a cane in hand. Stanley (1841-1904) was a British-American explorer and journalist, sent by James Gordon Bennett, the owner of the New York Herald, to find the missing Scottish missionary and explorer, Dr. David Livingstone, in central Africa in October 1869. After locating Livingstone at Ujiji, Tanganyika, in 1871, Stanley gained both fame and fortune. Stanley's exploits in Africa did not end there. He led several more expeditions, the last one in 1886 to find and relieve Emin Pasha. In 1892, Stanley took British citizenship and became the Unionist MP for Lambeth between 1895 and 1900. This historical engraving captures Stanley in his prime, embodying the spirit of adventure and discovery that characterized the age of imperialism.
