EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a moment of respite for Indian soldiers of the 29th Infantry Brigade during the Gallipoli Campaign of 1915. Taken by British photographer Reggie Savory, the image portrays Sikh soldiers resting in a trench, likely located in the Cape Helles area. The soldiers are armed with Short Magazine Lee Enfield Rifles (SMLE), a standard-issue firearm for the British and Indian armies during World War One. The 29th Indian Infantry Brigade, part of the 14th Sikh Regiment, had landed at Gallipoli on May 1, 1915, to support the Allied forces in their attempt to secure control of the peninsula from the Ottoman Empire. The soldiers' weary expressions and makeshift shelter underscore the harsh conditions they faced during their service. The photograph is one of 99 images in an album compiled by Lt. (later Lt. Gen. Sir) Reginald Arthur Savory, providing a poignant glimpse into the daily life and experiences of Indian soldiers during this pivotal period in world history.
