Step into the enchanting world of ancient history with this photograph of the Interior of the Temple of Bacchus at Baalbek, Lebanon. This image transports us back in time to the Roman-occupied town of Heliopolis, located in the Beqaa Valley east of the Litani River. Known for its vast sanctuaries and well-preserved ruins, Baalbek is a testament to the grandeur of the Roman Empire in the Middle East. Captured by Colonel David Sutherland during the early 1940s, this photograph offers a rare glimpse into the atmospheric interior of the Temple of Bacchus. The temple, dedicated to the Roman god of wine, fertility, and revelry, is adorned with intricate Corinthian capitals and an entablature that showcase the classical architectural brilliance of the era.
