Istanbul, Turkey - View toward the Burnt Column

The Column of Constantine (or Burnt Column ) is a monumental column constructed on the orders of the Roman emperor Constantine the Great in 330 AD. It commemorates the declaration of Byzantium (renamed by Constantine as Nova Roma) as the new capital city of the Roman Empire. The column is located on Yenicailer Caddesi in Cenberlitas, central Istanbul, along the old Divan Yolu (the Road to the Imperial Council ) between Sultanahmet and Beyazare (known as Forum Tauri in the Roman period.). Earthquakes and a fire in 1779 destroyed the neighborhood surrounding the column, leaving it with black scorch marks and earning it the name Burnt Column. The column was restored by Abdd I, who had the present masonry base added. The base was strengthened in 1779. The original platform of the column is 2.5 meters below ground. Date: circa 1920s

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the enigmatic beauty of Istanbul, Turkey's most iconic city, with a mesmerizing view toward the Burnt Column. The monumental Column of Constantine, also known as the Burnt Column, stands proudly along Yenicailer Caddesi in Cenberlitas, central Istanbul. This ancient column was erected by the Roman Emperor Constantine the Great in 330 AD to commemorate the declaration of Byzantium as the new capital city of the Roman Empire, renamed Nova Roma. The column's black scorch marks earned it the name 'Burnt Column' after earthquakes and a fire in 1779 destroyed the neighborhood surrounding it. The Ottoman-era tram adds an intriguing contrast to the historical backdrop, transporting visitors through time. The column's original platform is now 2.5 meters below ground, and the present masonry base was added during the restoration by Sultan Abdulhamid I. The base was further strengthened in 1779. This photograph, taken in the 1920s, offers a glimpse into the rich history of Istanbul, a city where the past and present seamlessly blend together. The Column of Constantine, a testament to the city's storied past, continues to stand as a symbol of Istanbul's enduring allure and resilience.
