EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: A Vibrant Underwater Tableau: Jack-knifefish, Oarfish, and Rock Beauty Angelfish This handcolored copperplate engraving, taken from Friedrich Bertuch's Bilderbuch fur Kinder (Picture Book for Children), published in Weimar in 1798, showcases three fascinating deep-sea dwellers: the Jack-knifefish (Equetus lanceolatus), the Oarfish (Regalecus glesne), and the Rock Beauty Angelfish (Holacanthus tricolor). The Jack-knifefish, depicted in the foreground, is easily identified by its elongated body and distinctive ability to bend its body in half, resembling a jackknife. This unique adaptation allows the fish to maneuver in tight spaces and hide from predators. In the middle ground, the Oarfish, with its long, serpentine body and dorsal fin resembling an oar, is shown swimming gracefully. This deep-sea dweller can grow up to 11 feet long and is the longest bony fish in the world. The Rock Beauty Angelfish, in the background, adds a burst of color to the image with its vibrant orange, yellow, and blue scales. This tropical angelfish is named for its striking appearance and its preference for living among rocky reefs. This engraving, a testament to the intrigue and wonder that the natural world has held for generations, offers a glimpse into the rich biodiversity of the ocean and the artistic skill of the past. The meticulous handcoloring and attention to detail bring these deep-sea creatures to life, transporting the viewer to an underwater realm filled with mystery and wonder.
