James Doughty, oldest clown in England

James Doughty of Brighton, at the time of this photograph the oldest clown in England, about to celebrate his 94th birthday. Seen here in costume with two of his performing dogs. In 1911 at the age of 93 he married a woman of 25, Alice Zilpah, and apparently his previous wife had been 25 years younger than him. He is said to have succeeded the famous clown Joseph Grimaldi at Drury Lane in 1851, taking over many of his wigs, props and songs. He died in March 1913

EDITORS COMMENTS
"Celebrating his 94th birthday in 1912, James Doughty of Brighton was the oldest clown in England at the time. Seated here in his colorful costume, he is surrounded by the joy and wonderment of his two performing dogs. At the age of 93, James had married Alice Zilpah, a woman of 25, making headlines for their age difference. It is said that James had succeeded the famous clown Joseph Grimaldi at Drury Lane in 1851, taking over many of his wigs, props, and songs. James' unique brand of comedy and humour had entertained people for decades, and his performances were a beloved tradition in Brighton. Despite his advanced age, James continued to beg for coins from the audience with his dogs, bringing laughter and delight to all who attended his shows. He passed away in March 1913, leaving behind a rich history of clowning in England." This photograph captures a moment in time, showcasing the oldest clown in England, James Doughty, as he prepares to celebrate his 94th birthday. Seated in his vibrant costume, James is joined by his faithful performing dogs, adding to the merriment of the scene. Known for his succession of Joseph Grimaldi's role at Drury Lane in 1851, James had a long and storied career in comedy and entertainment.
