Born in the village of Monikie, Angus, Scotland, Fisher was educated at the University of St. Andrews and ordained as a minister in the Church of Scotland in 1725. In 1733, Fisher and a group of like-minded ministers, known as the "Evangelical Party," left the Church of Scotland to form the Secession Church. Fisher's leadership and vision were instrumental in the growth and success of the Secession Church. He served as its Moderator from 1736 to 1739 and again from 1746 to 1749. Despite facing persecution and opposition, Fisher remained steadfast in his convictions.
