EDITORS COMMENTS
1. James Howard Harris, 3rd Earl of Malmesbury (1807-1889): A Victorian Era Statesman and Conservative Politician This striking colored engraving depicts James Howard Harris, 3rd Earl of Malmesbury, a prominent British statesman of the Victorian era. Born in 1807, Harris was styled as Viscount FitzHarris until 1841 when he succeeded his father as Earl of Malmesbury. His political career began in earnest in the 1830s, and he quickly rose through the ranks of the Conservative Party. Harris served in various government positions throughout his career, including as Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs from 1852 to 1854 and as Home Secretary from 1858 to 1859. He was known for his conservative and polician views, advocating for a strong central government and a stable political order. During his tenure as Foreign Secretary, Harris played a key role in shaping British foreign policy during a tumultuous period in European history. He worked to maintain the balance of power in Europe and prevent the spread of revolution, while also seeking to expand British influence abroad. Later in his career, Harris served as President of the Board of Trade and as Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster. He retired from politics in 1885 due to ill health. This engraving, published in the Spanish-language encyclopedia "Historia Universal" in 1881, captures the Earl of Malmesbury in the prime of his political career. With a stern expression and impeccably dressed in the formal attire of a British nobleman, Harris exudes the air of a seasoned statesman and a man of polity. The intricately detailed engraving serves as a testament to the skill of the engraver and the importance of visual representation in the Victorian era.
