EDITORS COMMENTS
John of Bohemia, also known as John the Blind, was a significant European monarch of the 14th century. Born in 1296 as the eldest son of Henry the Good, Count of Luxembourg, John ascended to the County of Luxembourg in 1309 following his father's death. In 1310, he was elected King of Bohemia, marking the beginning of the Luxembourg dynasty's rule in the region. Additionally, he held the title of King of Poland from 1320, although his control over the kingdom was limited. This engraving, created by Kaeseberg for the publication "Historia de Alemania" in 1865, portrays John of Bohemia as a regal and powerful figure. He is depicted on horseback, dressed in armor and wearing a crown, exuding an aura of authority and strength. The rich colors and intricate details of the engraving bring the image to life, transporting us back to the medieval era. John the Blind was known for his military prowess and diplomatic skills. He played a crucial role in the ongoing power struggles between various European rulers during the Middle Ages. Despite his blindness, which he suffered from after an injury in 1322, he continued to rule effectively, relying on trusted advisors and his exceptional memory. This engraving serves as a testament to John of Bohemia's legacy as a significant European monarch, showcasing his regal presence and the grandeur of the medieval era.
