EDITORS COMMENTS
John Douglas Campbell, the 9th Duke of Argyll (1845-1914), is depicted in this photograph taken during his tenure as Marquis of Lorne in the year 1870. Born on March 25, 1845, in London, England, Campbell was the eldest son of the 8th Duke of Argyll and Lady Elizabeth Sackville-West. He succeeded to the dukedom in 1870 upon the death of his father. The Duke is seen here wearing the traditional Scottish attire of a tartan kilt, sporran, and a ginger-colored waistcoat, which adds to the historical significance of the image. The Duke's hands are placed on his hips, exuding an air of confidence and authority. The Duke of Argyll was a prominent figure in Scottish and British history, serving as the Governor General of Canada from 1878 to 1883, during which time he and his wife, Princess Louise, the fourth daughter of Queen Victoria, played a significant role in the development of the Canadian Confederation. The Duke's military career was also noteworthy, as he served in the Crimean War and the Second Anglo-Afghan War. He was a keen sportsman and an accomplished artist, with a particular interest in archaeology. The Duke's legacy extends beyond his political and military achievements, as he was also a generous patron of the arts and a champion of Scottish culture. This photograph is a rare and valuable glimpse into the past, offering a glimpse into the life of a man who played a pivotal role in shaping the history of Scotland and Canada. The Duke of Argyll's legacy continues to be celebrated in both countries, and this image serves as a reminder of his significant contributions to their histories.
