1340 1399 1881 Barcelona Brittany Called Catalonia Chronicles Conqueror Count Froissart Montfort Richmond 14th

EDITORS COMMENTS
John V, Duke of Brittany, also known as 'John the Conqueror' (ca. 1340-1399), is depicted in this stunning 1881 engraving from the Chronicles of Jean Froissart. The Duke, dressed in the regal attire of the 14th century, is shown with a determined expression and a regal posture, holding a scepter in his right hand and a globe in his left. Surrounding him are symbols of his power and conquests, including a castle and a lion, the emblem of the Duchy of Brittany. Born around 1340, John V succeeded his father, Duke John IV, at the age of 14. He quickly established himself as a formidable ruler, expanding the territory of Brittany through military campaigns in Catalonia and the county of Montfort. One of his most notable victories was the capture of Barcelona in 1348, which secured his control over the region. The Duke's military prowess was not limited to land battles. He was also a skilled navigator and led a fleet to aid the English during the Hundred Years War against France. In recognition of his support, John was granted the earldom of Richmond in England. Despite his military exploits, John was also known for his patronage of the arts and learning. He founded a library in Nantes, which became one of the most important in Europe, and supported scholars and writers, including Jean Froissart, whose Chronicles feature this image of the Duke. This engraving, with its rich colors and intricate details, captures the essence of John V, Duke of Brittany, as a powerful and accomplished ruler of the 14th century.
