Born in New York City in 1832, Choate rose to prominence as a lawyer, arguing several landmark cases before the Supreme Court. However, his true calling was in diplomacy and politics. In 1892, he was appointed as the United States Ambassador to the Court of St. James's in London, a role he held until 1897.
