Composed Galop Stuyvesant

EDITORS COMMENTS
Not for Joseph" or "The Stuyvesant Galop" is a lively and spirited musical composition by American composer Paul Steinhagen, first published in 1858, although some sources suggest a later date of 1868. This galop, a popular dance form of the 19th century characterized by its quick, galloping rhythm, was named after Stuyvesant Town, a historic district in Manhattan, New York. The cover art for this musical score, depicted in the photograph, showcases an elegant scene of a ballroom filled with dancers, all dressed in the fashionable attire of the time. The women wear long, flowing gowns with tight bodices and full skirts, while the men don top hats and tails. The room is adorned with ornate decorations, including chandeliers, columns, and intricate wall designs. At the center of the image, a couple is shown in the act of dancing the galop. The man holds the woman's waist, guiding her through the steps of the dance, while she gracefully moves her feet in time with the music. The expression on their faces is one of joy and excitement, reflecting the infectious energy and fun of the dance. The title of the composition, "Not for Joseph," is a playful reference to the fact that the dance was not intended for Joseph Stuyvesant, the Dutch colonial director of New Netherland from 1647 to 1664. Instead, it was created for the enjoyment of the lively and diverse community that had grown up in the Stuyvesant Town area of Manhattan. This musical score and its accompanying cover art offer a glimpse into the social and cultural history of 19th-century America, showcasing the beauty, elegance, and energy of the galop dance and the vibrant community that embraced it.
